Ja natürlich - _alle_ CSS-Formatierungen sind optional.

Kommt mir so vor, als ob das die Standard-Positionierung wäre
und man diese Angabe theoretisch weglassen kann...

Nein, Default für position ist static.

Wenn du position:relative ohne Angaben zu top, left, bottom oder right einsetzt, bleibt das Element allerdings an seiner Normalposition im Fluss.
Allerdings kann relative Positionierung natürlich auch noch andere Auswirkungen haben, bspw. auf absolut positionierte Nachfahrenelemente.
